I searched several sites, and at Quikbook.com I found a room at Kimpton's Hotel Allegro -- it turned out to be 1 1/2 miles from the starting line. Check the online discounters. Quikbook.com ( http://www.quikbook.com/ ), one of the most reliable booking agencies with NYC rooms, is where the Park South offer popped up. Like most of the rooms on Quikbook, that rate was well below the $259 quoted on the hotel's own Web site. One of the virtues of Quikbook.com is that, with the exception of a small number of prepaid rooms, bills are settled at checkout (no fee is charged for booking and none for canceling, as long as reservations are voided at least 24 hours in advance).

Quikbook's best-rate offer changed to 3 days. Internet booking site Quikbook.com just upped the ante in the stakes of "why book here" on the Web. The company has extended its "best-rate guarantee" to 72 hours after booking. Most hotel sites and online booking agents (Orbitz, Hotels.com, etc..) offer a refund or matching price if you find a lower rate on the same room at the same hotel, but that offer generally expires after just 24 hours. Quikbook.com also has one of the better cancellation policies on the Web, charging nothing if it's a "pay when you get there" hotel. For pre-paid reservations, cancellation fees run just $10 for changes made four or more days before arrival, and $35 for changes made after that. Other sites may charge a full night's rate. Quikbook.com only sells hotels so you don't have a lot of airfare and car rental stuff to wade through, but it doesn't have quite the depth of other booking sites. For Las Vegas, Quikbook.com shows just 47 hotels, compared to Hotels.com's. But it does have a good inventory of mid-to-upper range properties, and now it has one of the Web's most consumer-friendly price guarantees.

I ended up booking a great room at an impossibly sold-out upscale hipster property -- at a really nice discount off the rack rate. I'm absolutely planning to use them again.

I haven't done this before, but wanted to share a personal anecdote involving one of Boing Boing's sponsors --Quikbook.com Recently, I needed to find a hotel room in a *totally* sold out city at the last minute. I had no luck with the travel websites and bucket shops I usually turn to for hotel booking. Just when it looked like a $900/night janitor's closet at the Podunk Craquehaus was my only option, I remembered the Quikbook.com ad on Boing Boing. I clicked tentatively, ended up booking a great room at an impossibly sold-out upscale hipster property -- at a really nice discount off the rack rate. I'm absolutely planning to use them again. The test case was to book a hotel room in New York City for a two-night, midweek business trip. We decided that the magic number was a three-star property at around $150, which is a very modest amount to spend on lodging in Manhattan.

This site is about hotels and nothing but hotels. Quikbook.com provides a feedback forum for each hotel that can prove illuminating. We especially liked the hotel map feature on the homepage, which can be very helpful if you’re interested in a specific destination.

The best feature, though is the Shortcuts Quikbook.com offers for speeding up your searches based on very specific criteria. While we scrolled through Expedia, trying to find a hotel that wasn’t at the airport, Quikbook.com easily found a winner at $169, near Penn Station. It’s within a short walk of Midtown and a good choice for business travelers. At this price level, it represents good value.

Overall, we felt as if we were dealing with pros who knew the hotel business inside and out. Quikbook.com is a simple, well-designed site that permits you to see virtually everything you need to know at a glance.

We went online and booked more than 800 imaginary trips over 30 consecutive days on 12 of the most popular Web sites…. Of course, we were after the best prices, but ease of use, navigability, customer service and quality of offers play a big part in the online booking experience, so we considered those factors as well.

Here's where you'll find the deepest discounts by booking online…. We much preferred Quikbook.com, which outdid all the other sites, including hotels.com. Bonus points: Quikbook.com's minimalist, uncluttered design is immensely easy to use. It took us just minutes to get $195 a night for three nights at New York's Soho Grand, while Expedia wanted $290 for the same room.

Consumer's Union Solves the Mystery: What Online Site is Cheaper

Of the non-opaque sites, Consumer WebWatch found that Quikbook.com (www.quikbook.com) was especially good for hotels. Quikbook.com's performance at providing the lowest hotel rates was "comfortably ahead" of other non-opaque sites, according to the Consumer's Union report. We agree; in the limited amount of cities Quikbook.com serves, we've generally found them to be a great resource for low hotel rates.

Canceling Rooms Gets Trickier

"Cancellation charges are more of an issue now than they were in the past," said Ray Vastola, president of Quikbook.com. "It's something the customer needs to be mindful of if they enter into an agreement where there is a fee if they have to cancel."

Quikbook.com charges customers $10 to change or cancel a prepaid reservation, but no fee for reservations that are not prepaid….

Most of Quikbook.com's competitors - including Hotels.com, Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity - typically charge $25 to change or cancel a hotel reservation, plus the hotel's penalty. (Rooms booked through Hotwire and Priceline cannot be changed or canceled.)

These booking sites have different cancellation policies depending on the hotel... For instance, I did a search for a two-night stay in Chicago at various Web sites, and came up with a $219-a-night rate at the [same hotel] at multiple sites…. Booking at the [hotel’s] site, there was a one-night penalty no matter how early you canceled, and a 100 percent penalty if you canceled within 48 hours of 4 p.m. the planned day of check-in. Expedia displayed nearly the same policy (the hour was different), plus its own $25 cancellation fee, and Orbitz had a similar policy, except that the full penalty kicked in if you canceled within 72 hours before noon of your arrival date.

But at Travelocity, you paid a one-night penalty (plus Travelocity's $25 fee) only if you canceled within two days of your planned check-in…and there was just the $25 penalty if you canceled earlier. Quikbook.com offered the most flexibility: you wouldn't pay any penalty if you canceled 24 hours before your arrival date (no stated time); after that, you'd pay a one-night fee….
